Position Summary



A highly qualified Director - Derivative Accounting is needed in Calpine’s Houston Office. The successful candidate for this position will be a primary day-to-day supervisor for the Trading Operations & Derivatives team. This position will report to the Vice President – Trading Operations & Derivatives, and will work directly with the CAO and CFO organization management teams, as well as coordinate with management of various front office and trade floor support functions.






Essential Duties and Responsibilities






  • Supervise the preparation of the monthly derivative and hedge accounting journal entries, ensuring appropriate support documentation

  • Manage processes and procedures to comply with monthly financial statement close deadlines

  • Supervise the preparation of financial statements and disclosure for all SEC and stand-alone reporting requirements, including derivative and financial instrument disclosures

  • Perform primary review of financial statement presentation and disclosure for all commodity and financial instrument contracts

  • Supervise and review preparation of monthly financial statement analytics, including performance analysis of market area variances, comparison to budget and other internal reporting metrics

  • Prepare and review compliance and support documentation for internal control and review purposes, including SOX 404 compliance requirements

  • Review, interpret and approve commodity and financial instrument contracts and ensure proper accounting application and recording

  • Facilitate interaction with internal and external auditors, and coordinate quarterly and annual financial statement reviews

  • Maintain appropriate support and documentation for control activity compliance and reporting, consistent with SOX 404 and other internal reporting requirements

  • Oversee compliance with SOX including derivative process flowcharts, risks and key controls

  • Prepare accounting memos and manage policy documents and analyses

  • Responsible for leading the development and presentation of derivate training materials

  • Facilitate special projects requirements

  • Responsible for dealing with all personnel issues, providing guidance to personnel, planning, and managing changes in the department

  • Interaction with Commodity Accounting, Risk and Financial Planning & Analysis to resolve general ledger reconciliation and presentation issues, and review monthly profit/loss margin reconciliations and variance explanations

  • Create/improve processes, train new personnel, and ongoing training of personnel as necessary for the timely and accurate completion of their duties

  • Provide feedback on a timely basis to staff and provide staff evaluations to management



 











JOB REQUIREMENTS:










 

Qualifications






  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance

  • Eight (8) or more years direct experience in a relevant accounting or finance role

  • Demonstrated progression of increasing levels of responsibility and supervision

  • CPA certification is required

  • MBA or other post-graduate degree is preferred

  • Big 4 experience (minimum Manager level) is preferred

  • In depth knowledge and understanding of the energy industry, specifically the independent power or utility sector

  • Deep understanding and experience with the electricity and natural gas markets, including primary regions and delivery locations

  • Comprehensive understanding of derivative and hedge accounting (including SFAS 133, SFAS 157, SFAS 161 and FIN 46)

  • Minimum of five (5) years experience with derivative and hedge accounting application, including specific interpretation and application of relevant DIG issues particularly as related to physical commodity contracts

  • Minimum of five (5) years experience assisting in preparing or reviewing commodity and financial instrument financial statement disclosures

  • Significant experience with commodity financial instrument deal structures, such as futures, swaps, options and other highly structured products and services, as well as valuation methodologies for each

  • An understanding of option valuation methodologies, correlation and regression analysis fundamentals and Value at Risk measurements

  • Strong technical accounting ability to research, analyze and apply US GAAP

  • Full understanding of Risk Control standards (such as COSO)

  • Computer skills including, but not limited to, Excel, Word or equivalents

  • Peoplesoft experience is preferred, but not required

  • Must have excellent communication skills, oral & written

  • Minimum five (5) years experience in a supervisory role leading a team in a position of authority

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and be able to serve as an accounting point of contact for management personnel

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with significant deadlines

  • Must be able to work 50 plus hours per week at various times during the year to meet deadlines and job requirements

  • The ability to handle multiple assignments on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy is essential

  • Must be motivated to work independently and complete responsibilities with limited supervision

  • Must be a self starter and successful problem solver
